What is Functional Medicine?
We take the time to understand your unique story-your lifestyle, nutrition, environment, and emotional well-being— because each of these plays a role in your health. By connecting the dots, we create a personalized plan that supports your body's natural ability to heal.
A Brief History of Functional Medicine
Functional medicine emerged in the late 20th century as a way to bridge conventional medicine and a deeper, root-cause approach to health. It was popularized in the early 1990s by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, often called the "Father of Functional Medicine," who emphasized that chronic disease is driven by imbalances in the body's interconnected systems — not just isolated symptoms.
This approach grew out of advances in nutrition science, biochemistry, and systems biology, and it integrates knowledge from both conventional and natural medicine. In 1991, The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) was founded to train healthcare practitioners in this model. Since then, functional medicine has gained worldwide recognition, especially for addressing complex, chronic health issues such as autoimmune disorders, digestive conditions, metabolic problems, and fatigue.
